THE COMMON THREAD PROJECT

The Common Thread Project is a community arts initiative based in Thunder Bay that brings together portrait photography, audio interviews, youth collaboration, and public art to create opportunities for people to encounter lives and experiences they might not otherwise come across.

Working alongside a small youth cohort, the project will create a series of community profiles featuring environmental portraits, audio interviews, and shared stories from people representing a wide range of lived experiences and perspectives across Thunder Bay.

Thunder Bay is a community with tremendous strengths, resilience, and diversity. At the same time, we continue to wrestle with division, racism, misunderstanding, and the challenges that arise when people become disconnected from one another. Common Thread grew out of a belief that one of the most important things we can do as human beings is learn to approach one another with curiosity, humility, and compassion, and to recognize the humanity we share beneath our differences.

The completed project will include a series of black-and-white portrait installations displayed throughout the city and accompanied by written excerpts and audio interviews accessible through QR codes. The installations will rotate through community locations across Thunder Bay, creating opportunities to reflect on the assumptions we make about one another and to recognize some of the shared human experiences that shape our lives.

The project is currently in development. Stay tuned for updates, opportunities to get involved, and information about future installations.
